An Introductory Guide To Police Scanners

By: James Smith
Post Date: 2009-05-07

Recently, while scouring for a gift for my uncle, someone suggested that I could get him a police scanner. At first, I was bewildered. What's a police scanner? It was only after some explanation that I finally got to know what is that. And it seems that there are many people within my uncle's town who seems to having one such device. Perhaps it's due to the fact that my uncle's town is a pretty small community which makes it nice to know what's going on within the neighbourhood. In fact, there was once when my uncle was notified of a family emergency because of the information that was transmitted via his neighbour's scanner.

What are Police Scanners

A police scanner is essentially a radio scanner which is able to receive wireless radio signal transmissions. The reason why it's commonly known as police scanner is the fact that users of such devices tend to enjoy listening to the radio broadcast from the police department. Such broadcast signals include 2 way two-way radio transmissions used everyday business activities and public safety.

Unlike a conventional radio, the police scanner is able to pick up many radio signals and bands at the same time, making it possible to easily keep track of many channels simultaneously. They can be tuned to the same frequency as the scanners that the police, fire, and emergency crews use when transmitting information.

Many people have questioned the legality of police scanners. But well, perhaps the fact that many people have this in their homes could give a clue to that. Some of the users also use it for personal safety purposes. Like in the case of my uncle, he was informed of the family emergency because of his neighbour's scanner!

Besides, the police and fire departments also respond emergency calls for help which range anywhere from a small disturbance to a major calamity. These scanners can also pre-empt you on the situations which is happening in your neighbourhood and perhaps help you avoid dangerous situations. You will be able to know what's happening around you at all times, even whilst you travel provided if mobile use is allowed.

If you are keen to get a police scanner for yourself, be prepared to do a bit of research. A police scanner is not cheap and to ensure that you get the best deal for your dollar, shop around. You can still get relatively good deals from various online stores and even places like eBay or Amazon.
