Ear Pinning Is Most Commonly Performed On Children Between the Ages Of Four and Fourteen

Ear pinning is most commonly performed on children between the ages of four and fourteen. Ear pinning on adults is possible as well and there are no additional risks associated on performing the procedure on adult patients. The procedure can help a child avoid teasing from peers because of protruding ears. Such factors may affect an individual's confidence, leading them to seek their own ear pinning procedure.

Ear pinning can improve the overall balance of a patient's face. The ears are pulled in closer to the head or reduced in size to produce a more natural look. Plastic surgeons accomplish such effects by either removing skin to pull the ears back or by reducing the cartilage inside. This not only helps to improve the physical appearance of the patient, but also restores self-confidence and respect to the patient.

Ear pinning is a very individualized procedure in which your goals should be realistically determined and discussed with your physician. Together you will determine what specific procedures will be performed. Ear pinning can be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a nose job to enhance the balance of the patient's facial features. Once your goals have been determined, you will set a date for this procedure and will be given instructions about how to prepare.

When the date for your ear pinning has arrived, you should plan on the surgery taking several hours depending on which procedures you are having performed. Ear pinning can be accomplished in more than one way, as each individual is different and may have different requirements. The surgery can remove cartilage to reshape the ear and bring it closer to the head or remove skin to pull the ear back.

An incision is usually hidden behind the ear where it least likely to be seen and the faint scar will fade with the passing of time. All procedures are performed with anesthesia to minimize any discomfort or pain.

After the surgery, the patient will usually be up and moving but will require bandages to hold the ear in place. Physical activity that could potentially bend the ear should be avoided for about a month or so. Discuss with your cosmetic surgeon which procedure is best for you.

A plastic surgeon can help you to achieve your goals. Many plastic surgeons specialize in procedures relating to ear pinning including procedures such as brow lifts, breast augmentation, nose jobs, ear pinning, liposuction, and tummy tucks.
