Fair Child Support Payments

It's time to go back to school and learn how you can save some money in child support. One of the major things that child support payments are based on is the amount of visitation time you have with your children. When you increase this time, you not only get to spend more time with your kids but you also change the child support payments in your favor (if you're the custodial parent you should get more child support and if you're the non-custodial parent you should pay less). So, we're going to discuss a large chunk of time where neither parent is taking care of the kids--when the kids are in school.
Who should benefit from the time the kids spend in school? This is definitely worth thinking about if you want to make a fair custody schedule that leads to fair child support payments. Let's say that you're the non-custodial parent who only has the kids for the weekends. You should also be credited for the time with the kids on Monday during school because: you got the kids up in the morning, you fed them breakfast and got them ready, you made sure their homework was done, and you took them to school. Thus the school day should be scheduled to you. Child support is about taking care of the children. That's what you did. It makes sense that you are credited with being the parent for that time since it was your job to prep them for it.
Being precise with time-share percentages and adjusting child support accordingly isn't unfair to the kids--and it isn't about conning the ex. It's actually about what's real and fair in your custody situation. So, it's worthwhile to take a look at your child custody calendar and split up the school days according to what parent got them ready and what parent got them after school. There are some child custody software programs that make this really easy to do. You can click on the calendar and change what parent has custody during the day--and the software then calculates the percentages so you know exactly where you stand. Making this change in your child visitation agreement can make a huge difference in the time-share percentages and will more accurately reflect the parenting of your child.
Most parents have no idea about this unaccounted for time, and so arming yourself with this knowledge can give you the edge you need in your custody situation.
