If you have a knack for designing, you can start your own home-based business. Whether your knowledge and skills are inherent, earned by education or experience, materializing your vision is very fulfilling.
There is a good and wide market for interior design. You can design the interior of a living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and dining room of residence. Several markets that are constantly in need of designing services are hotels, resorts, law firms, and corporate buildings.
You will also design model homes for home builders, museum, art galleries and advertising agencies. There are two types of market for interior design. These are residential and commercial. Decide which one is your niche for your home-based business.
If you will go for residential interior design, you need to focus on planning and specifying materials and products for private residences. Although residential projects are smaller when it comes to contract value and scope, they have higher profit margin especially if you are marketing the materials and products for designing.
Commercial projects are bigger. However, the profits are not very high considering that the projects are given to the lowest bidder. Commercial design covers movie houses, theatres, theme parks, clubs and musical and drama theatres.
In order for you get started, you need to set up your home office. You will need a small area at home or in your apartment where you will work. Office supplies, furniture and equipment are what you need to complete the set up of your home office.
Besides having a computer set, you will also need AutoCAD software for presentation of your design in three-dimensional setting. Printer, telephone line and fax machine are also important; and so are office table and office cabinet for data storage.
Since you are an interior designer for quite a long time, you may have read several books on interior design. You can display these books in your home office. Having them provides a professional and being "an authority" image on your home-based business.
Books are considered as lifeblood of interior design business. Your clients would always refer to them for additional concepts. Sample books of products are important as well. There are manufacturers that provide free catalogue, magazine or brochure to feature their products. Collect as many portfolios from suppliers as you can.
Your home office should also convey an artful design. Make it simple, yet rich. The appearance of your home office reflects much on your skill and personality. It should have an impressive impact on your clients.
Setting the prices for your services vary. There are projects that pay just your concepts, and the owners shall cover the expenses for materials. There are also projects that pay both your design and materials needed.
There are few factors that help determine the right price for your design. These are the complexity of the projects, geographical location, experience and many other factors. Interior design home-based business may follow any of the standard systems for fixing the price for your interior design and services.
