Home PC Protection: Simple Steps To Take For Maximum Security

Most homes nowadays have cable or DSL connections which provide fast, 'always-on' internet access. While this has been a great benefit to computer users, it also increases the chance your computer will be attacked. Don't panic. It's easy to secure your computer and protect your family from the threats that exist.
Start With Malware Defense
The biggest threats to your home computer don't come from people, at least not directly. It is rare you will have an actual hacker trying to break into your system to steal your files. Instead, hackers write programs that travel the internet automatically looking for security vulnerabilities. These could be viruses intended to damage your computer, spyware which secretly installs itself on your system and looks for sensitive data such as credit card numbers or passwords, or simply annoying adware which hijacks your browser with ads for cheap pharmaceuticals. Collectively these kinds of programs are called malware.
The best way to fight software is with software. It has become impossible to manually find and remove the malicious software that threatens your computer, but an anti-malware application can help. Anti-malware programs protect your system 24/7, doing nothing but watching activity on your computer and reacting immediately to perceived threats. They keep your system safe so you don't have to worry.
Keep Your Protection Current
Although nearly every home computer has some kind of software security, a frightening percentage of these applications are out of date. Malware comes and goes and the threats of today are nothing like the threats computers faced a few months or even a few weeks ago. Many malware applications include an automatic update feature which ensures you always have the latest tools against malicious programs. If you prefer to update manually, you often have that option as well.
Your malware defense isn't the only software you should keep updated. Keep your Windows operating system current with the latest security patches as Microsoft discovers new security threats. Other applications including productivity suites, web browsers and even online games should be patched as needed so you know you are fully protected.
Keep Threats Out With A Firewall
The best way to fight malware is to keep it out of your system in the first place. A firewall is a security application that prevents unauthorized activity across your internet connection. Windows includes a built-in firewall, but there are a number of free and inexpensive firewall programs which are more beneficial.
There are also hardware firewalls called routers. These devices, which look similar to your DSL or cable modem, are designed to allow multiple computers to use a single internet connection. By controlling network traffic they also prevent unauthorized access to your home computer from the outside. Even if you connect just one computer to the internet, a router is a good security investment.
