How the Oklahoma Insurance Department is Helping Homeowners Save on Their Homeowners Insurance

By: Anthony Peck

The most important purchase you make when it comes to your home isn't your sofa. It isn't your television. It's not even your roof shingles. The most important thing you're ever going to buy for your home is your homeowners insurance, and the Oklahoma Insurance Department is helping homeowners shop smart to get the best deal possible on their homeowners insurance.

Yes it's true. All government agencies are not, in fact, out to get you and there are no secret conspiracies. In fact, thanks to recent legislation and a renewed interest in the way insurance companies are pigeon-holing their policy holders organizations like the Oklahoma Insurance Department are actually doing their best to help America's homeowners get the coverage they need at a price they can afford.

Here's what the Oklahoma Insurance Department has to say to Oklahoma homeowners about shopping for homeowners insurance:

a) Shop around. Not only is it highly unlikely that you're going to get the best deal on your homeowners insurance the first time out, you're also taking the spirit of competition out of the game! There are major homeowners insurance providers from coast to coast looking for your business, which means that they're constantly trying to one up each other. And how do insurance companies compete?

By offering the best coverage at the lowest prices.

b) Understand what makes up the cost of your homeowners insurance. Your insurance costs will be based primarily on your home and its location, including (but not limited to) your replacement costs, construction materials, city/county and the availability of local fire protection. Once you know what they use to make a choice you'll be ready to launch an attack to get the best possible coverage at the lowest possible cost.

c) Ask your agent the right questions-for example, what does my policy cover? Your decision shouldn't be solely based on cost. While ignorance is bliss it definitely doesn't pay to be ignorant about what your homeowners insurance will cover. A cheap homeowners insurance policy with cheap coverage is going to leave you with a very big bill at the end of the day.

d) Know what discounts your home qualifies for. Most Oklahoma homeowners insurance providers will offer you a discount for:

1. Hail resistant roofing.
2. Heating, electrical or plumbing updates that bring your building up to code.
3. Approved electronic burglar alarms.
4. Your credit score.
5. Going (X) number of years without filing a claim.
6. The age of your home.
7. Purchasing a companion policy, such as an auto or life insurance policy, from the same company offering your homeowners insurance coverage.
8. Your age.
9. Your career.

Remember, homeowners insurance might be necessary, but that doesn't mean it should completely ruin your budget! You can find more information on buying homeowners insurance without paying an arm and a leg at the Oklahoma Insurance Department website.
