No home owner wants to look over their head and see a ceiling that has water damage. Sometimes they will let it go for a while simply because they really do not want to know what is causing it. When water is coming in overhead, it usually means one thing, a leaky roof and attic. This is where most ceiling water damage does come from and by the time you see water rings on the ceiling inside the home, you might have developed a pretty serious problem.
You should know that when you have noticed water rings on any ceiling in your home, it is definitely t something that you need to delay in investigating. Unless you have some sort of plumbing pipes up in the attic, chances are pretty good that you have a roof leak going on somewhere. Just because you see the water damaged ceiling, does not mean that the problem is severe just yet, but the longer you put off finding and fixing the problem, the more damage will be done.
One thing you might do is wait until it rains again and go up into your attic. Make sure it is well lighted so you can see everywhere. Just because you are directly over the room where the ceiling has been wet does not necessarily mean that is exactly where the leak is. You can have a leak in one spot and if it runs along a rafter it might end up wetting a spot several feet a way. When it is raining you may be able to discover where the water is getting in at. If you can find it yourself, this is one step a repairman will not have to charge you for, but if you think the problem is serious, you might not wish to wait until it rains to call a repairman.
The reason the roof is leaking could be as simple a loose shingle or two and many times a homeowner can repair this themselves. If the problem has gone beyond a few shingles and has been going on for a while, you might have damage to the plywood under the shingles too. If this has happened you might already have rotting and mold damage. This usually means at least this section of a roof may have to be replaced. This job you probably can not do yourself.
If you find water coming into the attic from the roof, whether it is major or minor, you should contact your insurance company. You never know for sure how bad be damage might already be until you get someone up there to check it out thoroughly. No matter the severity of the leak, it must be fixed right away.
