What Are My Choices In Ceiling Lights ?

The ceiling lights in our homes are arguably the most important ones, as they are typically used the most frequently and serve as the greatest light source in a room. However, the variety of lighting fixtures for ceilings seems to be unlimited. These pieces are available in all types of shapes, colors and sizes, thus providing you with an array of options. In this article, we'll look at residential lighting options to help you decide on which look is best for your home.

The three basic types of ceiling lights are task lights, accent lights, and ambient or general lights. A well lit room or space will have a pleasing and effective combination of each type. For example, kitchen lighting often requires different levels of illumination.

You'll need bright lighting so that you can see clearly while cooking. However, you may want something a little softer for above a kitchen table for reading while enjoying a cup of coffee. You can use directional track lighting to brighten your counter and stove area, and a contemporary mini chandelier on a dimmer for the seating area. By layering the lighting, you can control how dim or bright the room is.

Chandeliers are among the most popular ones to hang from the ceiling and the designs have come a long way from the bulky eyesores they once were. The fanciness of chandeliers can vary but generally they illuminate by creating refracted light through cut crystal pieces or glass.

Chandeliers used to be a big investment but they have come down in price in recent years. If you're redecorating on a budget, then mini chandeliers, iron chandeliers and glass chandeliers are a less expensive option to crystal chandeliers and are every bit as attractive.

The type of chandelier you choose should reflect the style of the furniture and not stand out like a sore thumb in a room. Choose a size and style that complements the decor.

Pendant lights are also making a comeback. Usually, a pendant ceiling light features a design that is etched onto the exterior of the fixture. This design can include just about anything so you can choose one that complements your color scheme or a theme in the decor.

Pendant lights are very popular in kitchens, and you can easily install one above the table and counters. By shining white, colored, bright or dimmed light throughout the room, you can set the mood for a variety of dining occasions in the kitchen. Similarly, hanging lamps are a great choice. Many people still love the traditional Tiffany shades, but hanging lights now also come in cracked glass, vintage class and contemporary metallic designs.

Choosing good ceiling lights is as simple as knowing your needs and tastes. To create a functional and pleasant environment, layer your lighting, choose fixtures that coordinate with your decor, and use bulbs that create a warm glow. Keep in mind that light can be absorbed and even wasted in dark-colored rooms, or reflected and used as additional illumination in light-colored rooms.

Don't be afraid to experiment and break the rules. You'll appreciate the risk when you're basking in the comfortable, relaxing environment that you've created.
