What Is A 12 Volt Transformer And How Can I Make Use Of It?

What do you need to use 12 volt lighting fixtures such as landscape lighting? You will need a low voltage cable and a 12 volt transformer. In general, a transformer is an implement that has the ability to transfer electrical energy between circuits using inductively coupled conductors or the transformer's coils. The resultant effect is called inductive coupling.

A low voltage transformer allows you to step down the typical 110/120 volt power in your home to the 12 volt power needed for the 12 volt lamps. There are also four lead transformers available if you want to power more than one fixture. These low voltage lights come in a variety of styles and wattages. Out side they include flood lights to help draw attention to spectacular architecture as well as accent lights and path lights.

Low voltage systems are usually installed by homeowners or anyone with a general handyman knowledge. High voltage systems need a licensed contractor, but most low voltage lighting use existing outdoor receptacles so an electrical contractor is not needed. The 12 volt transformer converts the high voltage found in your home (120 volt) to a safer 12 volts. Check with the building department if you have any doubts about installation.

One of the primary benefits of using a low voltage lighting system is safety. There is no need to be concerned about high voltage shocks which can be very painful and cause paralysis or worse. Furthermore, low voltage lighting is designed to be used in wet or damp conditions. The wiring is hidden from view in shallow trenches or simply under low ground coverings, so it is easy to install.

There are different types and sizes of transformers. The one you purchase depends on the wattage and number of lights you wish to connect. Add the total wattage of all the lamps, and then as a safety factor, add ten percent more. This will give you the size of the transformer. Your 12 volt transformer may also have different features you can choose depending on your designated use.

Two primary types of transformers are 1) Single voltage and 2) Multi-tap. The single voltage transformers are the ones with the 12 volt output and are used for small lighting systems. Multi-tap transformers usually have several volt outputs which means the voltage to the circuit is easy increased from 12 volts to 13, 14, or 15 volts. This lets you compensate for the voltage drops in your larger lighting systems.

Many folks choose a 12 volt transformer that is a plug-in design that has a rating of 120V/12V with a 60-watt maximum. It is typically used with display lighting that uses halogen lamps. There is also a version with a 230V/12V rating. This is for use in 230-volt countries. Other wattages are also available.

An economy transformer works great for simple systems with less than 100 feet of wire in a run. They plug into a typical electrical outlet, and they are built with weatherproof housings to use outdoors. Most have a mechanical timer which is very convenient.
