If you are a college student who wants to start building up your credit history one of the best tools that you can use to do that is a student credit card. There are some things you should understand though before signing on the line.
First of all you won't need to do much looking for a college student credit card. As long as you are enrolled the companies will likely come to you. Many have their employees visit campuses to get people to sign up. Often free stuff like shirts, coffee mugs and pens are given away. Even if no one show up at your school there are many sites online where you can find applications.
One thing you need to consider is whether you can actually afford to have a credit card. Even though great convenience comes with having a card if you don't have enough income or funds to be able to make payments then maybe you should think twice.
Student credit cards need to be used with caution. The feeling of independence is great but small purchases can add up quickly and easily get out of control. If you are going to get a credit card you need to understand the need to be financially responsible. Also remember there are always fees and finance charges on unpaid balances that will need to be paid.
Often credit cards have low introductory fixed rates. While that is great remember that they often don't last for more than a year. After the introductory period expires the rate can and often does change frequently. Floating rates should not scare anyone away it is just something to be aware of.
Once you start using your student credit card make sure to check your bills for accuracy. People will sometimes find errors so you should keep all your receipts to check against your statement. Do not feel bad about questioning errors. If they arise be sure to call your credit card company.
Just remember to be careful with any credit card. If you mismanage your card it can be easy to get into trouble and ruin your credit. It can take years to recover from bad credit and it has a way of following one around especially when it comes time to look for a good job or buy a house. Managing your student credit card well on the other hand can help boost your credit score which can help to open up doors of opportunity later on.
